The director and star of the upcoming Marvel film Thor: Love and Thunder only want to make more Thor films if they can do it together. Portraying the titular God of Thunder, Chris Hemsworth first appeared in the MCU in 2011's Thor. Since then, Hemsworth has played Thor in eight other MCU films, including three (soon to become four) films in the solo Thor franchise. Director Taika Waititi made his MCU debut with the third Thor film, Thor: Ragnarok, in 2017. With Ragnarok's incredible success, Waititi was brought back to direct the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.
While Hemsworth had been in the role of Thor for six years prior to Waititi joining Marvel, it was the unique direction that Waititi took in Ragnarok that made Hemsworth enjoy the Thor series again. The actor has admitted in the past that he found the franchise's second film, Thor: The Dark World, to be somewhat underwhelming and predictable. Though Thor would continue to develop as a character in several films with his fellow Avengers, Hemsworth later revealed to Waititi that he had become "bored of Thor," a sentiment which the director shared. In Ragnarok, the duo took the character in an entirely new direction that was driven by Waititi's unique tone and humor. This proved to be a very successful move, as Ragnarok is the highest grossing Thor movie to date.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Hemsworth and Waititi say that the only way either of them will continue to make Thor movies is if they do it together. Waititi admitted that it would feel strange to direct a Thor film without Hemsworth in the mix, and that he'd be disappointed if the actor didn't agree to return for one.
