Extraction 2 writer and producer Joe Russo explains how the upcoming sequel will differ from the original movie starring Chris Hemsworth. Released on Netflix in 2020, the action-thriller starred the Thor actor as a former SASR operator in the Australian Army who becomes a black market mercenary. Based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, the film follows Hemsworth's Tyler Rake as he is recruited to extract an Indian drug lord's son who has been kidnapped.
Extraction received largely positive reviews for its electric action sequences and lead performance from Hemsworth, though some criticized its violence as excessive and its story as generic. But it was an undeniable hit on Netflix, as Extraction became the most-watched Netflix movie at the time with 99 million household views in its first four weeks. It has since been overtaken byRed Notice, Don't Look Up, andThe Adam Project. Still, it was a no-brainer for Netflix to begin developing an Extraction sequel with director Sam Hargrave, writer/producer Joe Russo, and Hemsworth all returning.
