As their working relationship remains strong, Taika Waititi has the perfect role for Chris Hemsworth in Our Flag Means Death. Created by People of Earth alum David Jenkins, the period rom-com is loosely based on the true story of Stede Bonnet, a wealthy aristocrat who leaves his comfortable life in the hopes of becoming a pirate during the Golden Age of Piracy. Stede will have to work with his dysfunctional crew to survive a variety of threats on the open seas, including notorious Edward «Blackbeard» Teach, with whom he eventually falls in love.
Rhys Darby leads the cast of Our Flag Means Death as Stede alongside Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Samson Kayo, Con O'Neill, Vico Ortiz, Rory Kinnear, Nat Fox and Taika Waititi as Blackbeard. Premiering on HBO Max this past March, the series has scored widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike for its unique sense of humor, performances from its cast and the its substantial LGBTQ+ representation, having featured three queer relationships, including between Stede and Blackbeard. With the show also proving to be a ratings success, HBO Max officially greenlit Our Flag Means Death season 2 earlier this month and those behind the show have thoughts on who could join the swashbuckling adventure.
