Charlie Cox says he enjoys discovering Easter eggs in the Daredevil TV show while reading through the entire comic book run of the character. Cox played Matt Murdock/Daredevil in three seasons of Daredevil and one series of The Defenders between 2015 and 2018. Recently, he reprised the role for a surprise cameo appearance in last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Significantly more successful than the much-maligned film adaptation of the character from 2003, the Daredevil serieswas a hit with critics and fans alike who appreciated its mature storytelling, strong performances and reverence towards the source material.
Daredevil and The Defenders were part of an interconnected series of shows produced by Marvel Television for Netflix, which also included Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and The Punisher. Although these shows were nominally set in the MCU, their connection to the cinematic wing of the franchise was tangential at best before Cox’s appearance in No Way Home and Vincent D’Onofrio’s recent return to the role of Daredevil antagonist Wilson Fisk in Hawkeye. This opens the door for more appearances down the line, and Cox is brushing up on the character's history.

Now, in a recent interview for ComicBook, Cox reveals he's begun to reread the entire comic book run of Daredevil. He states that he previously did this to prepare for his role in the original show, but has recently noticed several ways in which the comics influenced the TV incarnation of Daredevil that he hadn’t spotted during his first read-through. These include a scene involving a confessional in Kevin Smith and Joe Quesada’s 1998 story Guardian Devil, which is echoed in the pilot
