Channing Tatum hopes his dream of a Gambit movie could come true after his appearance as the X-Men character in .
It’s been nine years since Tatum and producing partner Reid Carolin began developing a standalone Gambit movie for 20th Century Fox. Unfortunately, that dream appeared to die in 2019 when Disney merged with Fox.
But now that he’s finally got a chance to put on that Cajun drawl and throw those cards on the big screen, Tatum is eager to revive that dream. When Variety asked him about it at the premiere of his new movie Blink Twice, he said, “I sure hope so. From your mouth to God’s ears. Write it into existence, my friend. Please.”
Tatum has already been on at Marvel about it, as well. “I’ve course I’ve said it. I’ve been saying I want it for the last 10 years,” Tatum said. “It’s in Bob Iger and Kevin Feige’s hands. I pray to God.”
Tatum clearly values the character, and he praised Ryan Reynolds after he helped him get the opportunity to play Gambit in Deadpool and Wolverine.
In a social media post, he wrote, “I can say that there is almost no one that has had my back in this industry more than @VancityReynolds. I thought I had lost Gambit forever. But he fought for me and Gambit. I will owe him probably forever. Cause I’m not sure how I could ever do something that would be equal to what this has meant to me. I love ya buddy.”
Gambit hasn’t had the best luck on the big screen. The character was omitted from the majority of the X-Men films. He did appear in the other Wolverine and Deadpool movie, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, from 2009. But there, he was played by Taylor Kitsch of John Tucker Must Die and John Carter fame.
With a new era in the MCU that will feature the X-Men, Tatum may yet get the opportunity to play Gambit again, even if it isn’t a standalone movie.
