In a repeat from last weekend, the animated adventure Kung Fu Panda 4 and Dune: Part Two led the box office, per Deadline. Both movies maintained their strong performance, with Panda experiencing only a 48% decline, accumulating $30 million in its second weekend and reaching a domestic total of $107.7 million. Meanwhile, Dune saw a 37% drop, earning $29.1 million in its third weekend and bringing its domestic total to $205.3 million.
Panda has grossed a stellar $177M worldwide, though it has yet to roll out in some territories. Dune, meanwhile, leaped past the $500M mark after accruing another $51.2M from 73 international markets. Per the trade, Denis Villeneuve’s sequel is tracking 47% ahead of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, 20% over Godzilla vs. Kong, and 7% ahead of Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning.
Elsewhere, Mark Wahlberg’s Arthur the King struggled against stiff competition, snagging just $7.5M (3,003 theaters), A24’s Love Lies Bleeding earned just $2.485M (1,362 theaters), Bleeker Street’s One Life collected a mere $1.7M (983 theaters), and Focus Features’ The American Society of Magical Negroes flatlined with $1.25M (1,147 theaters) — the third arthouse dud in a row for Universal following Lisa Frankenstein ($3.7M) and Drive-Away Dolls ($5M).
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will be released this weekend. Some box office experts believe it will open with $50M. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire follows a week later.
