Keeping in line with his DC persona, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson says Black Adam doesn’t “give a f—ck” about the Suicide Squad. Amanda Waller’s team of convicted supervillains who embark on deadly missions in exchange for reduced sentences was first introduced to the DC Extended Universe in David Ayer’s 2016 film Suicide Squad. Last year, James Gunn’s quasi-sequel brought back Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, and Captain Boomerang (briefly) while introducing a plethora of oddball characters to Task Force X's lineup of anti-heroes. Now, however, director Jaume Collet-Serra's upcoming Black Adam is set to introduce what could be Warner Bros./DC Films’ most ruthless anti-hero in Johnson’s titular character.
The former WWE superstar turned A-list action hero has been attached to the role of Black Adam for nearly a decade. As one of the most formidable figures in DC lore, Johnson has repeatedly hyped how his character will redefine the hierarchy of power in the DCEU. In the comics, the character is an Egyptian slave who is granted superpowers by the ancient wizard Shazam. The first official trailer for Black Adam teased his tragic backstory and vow never to be enslaved again. In short, the anti-hero does whatever he pleases even if that means killing. In the present, Black Adam’s indifference leads to a confrontation with the Justice Society of America, which includes Pierce Brosnan's Dr. Fate, Noah Centineo's Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone, and Aldis Hodge's Hawkman.
