The MultiVersus website has detailed the characters that players will get for free when they start the game.
Yesterday, Warner Bros. confirmed the starting date for MultiVersus' open beta, as well as detailing how to get early access. Although many were happy to finally know when they can start playing the game after months of speculation, there was still a good deal of questions brought up by those who played the closed beta, including what characters were going to be given for free this time around.

For those who don't know, MultiVersus has had several different playable tests by now and each time has had different starting characters that are given for free to the player, with the rest having to be purchased with coins. For reference, the closed alpha gave out Shaggy, Taz, Harley Quinn, Finn, Jake, Velma, Bugs Bunny, Reindog, and Tom and Jerry.
This time around, however, it's a much smaller free roster of characters, as revealed by an open beta Q&A on the game's site. According to that site, when you start playing the open beta you'll be given Jake, Harley Quinn, Taz, and Shaggy for free. Out of a confirmed roster of 16 characters, only 25 percent of them will be playable from the start, a massive drop compared to the more than 50 percent that were playable from the start in the closed alpha.
Although that is a much smaller starting roster than it was in the closed alpha, it does make some sense when you consider that the open beta is being treated as a soft launch of the game and that all progress will be permanent from now on.
