Director James Gunn has poked fun at age rating complaint reports relating to his DCEU movie, The Suicide Squad. While not every franchise in the DCEU has received sequels, Suicide Squad is one of the few that moved forward. Following David Ayer's critically-panned Suicide Squad in 2016, Gunn was tasked with contining the franchise with The Suicide Squad. The DCEU project saw the live-action debut of the Justice League villain, Starro the Conqueror. Gunn's version of The Suicide Squad also expanded the DCEU with new players like Peacemaker, with John Cena's character going on to star in his own HBO Max spinoff series. One of the things that made The Suicide Squad stand out was that it became one of Warner Bros.' few R-rated DC movies, and was characterized by extreme violence, gore and strong language.
