James Gunn celebrates the 1-year anniversary of filming Peacemaker with a new behind-the-scenes cast picture. Gunn serves as writer, director, and showrunner for the HBO Max series. The first television series in the DC Extended Universe, Peacemaker serves as a spin-off to 2021's The Suicide Squad with John Cena reprising his role following the events of the film. Peacemaker sees the anti-hero tasked with eliminating an alien species, coined «Project Butterfly», as he confronts both his inner turmoil and past following the death of his father. Cena was lauded for his dramatic performance as the show allowed a more vulnerable side of the actor to shine through.
James Gunn shared a behind-the-scenes selfie of the Peacemaker cast on Instagram to celebrate the 1-year anniversary of filming the series. Season 1 wrapped almost a year ago on July 11, 2021. The photo comes as fans look forward to Peacemaker season 2, which was confirmed shortly before the season 1 finale premiered. Peacemaker quickly became a hit with audiences, as viewership increased with each episode, and the season finale earned the title of highest single-day viewership for an HBO Max original series.
