Benedict Cumberbatch reacts to rumors that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will introduce the Illuminati. After his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange will be venturing on his own adventure via the Sam Raimi-directed flick. Not much is known regarding the movie's plot specifics, but the first Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer offers fans an idea of what to expect from the blockbuster.
Marvel Studios debuted the first footage for the project via Spider-Man: No Way Home's post-credits scene. But it was during Super Bowl LVI that its first proper trailer was released. The clip was chockfull of interesting visuals, but with barely any context given, not to mention the studio's penchant for editing marketing footage, it's difficult to gauge what's going on in the film. One of fans' clear takeaway from it, however, is that the sequel could be introducing the Illuminati.

When asked about this by Entertainment Tonight at the SAG Awards 2022, Cumberbatch was coy with his answer, and understandably so considering how Marvel Studios is with their projects. He did promise, however, that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is «a feast. It’s a Sam Raimi special. It’s got everything it says in the title and a lot more besides.” Check out his answer below:
»It's the beginning of all of this, isn't it? I kind of escaped it with Spider-Man because we were doing reshoots for Strange, I couldn't do the tour. Poor Tom [Holland] and [Zendaya and Jacob Batalon] and everyone else had to go, 'Yeah. Haven't heard about that' and just sort of deny everything."
