The notorious Poison Ivy is about to begin a chapter in her life that promises to return the character to unabashed villainy in DC Comics. Amid some drastic changes to her personal life, Ivy’s planning to get back to the basics and protect the world at the cost of humanity in her own upcoming series. To illustrate that point, a series of variant covers for the first issue show off what readers can come to expect from the new, yet familiar, Poison Ivy.
Dr. Pamela Isley, also known as Poison Ivy, began her career as a villain in Batman #181 by Robert Kanigher and Sheldon Moldoff. Though more often than not a member of Batman's expansive rogue's gallery, Ivy's protective nature towards plant life has led to more anti-heroic characterizations. Much like her friend and lover, Harley Quinn, Pamela has ventured away from traditional villainy in recent years, but Poison Ivy has consistently remained an ecological warrior.

However, Poison Ivy is preparing to take center stage in a brand-new comic from G. Willow Wilson, Marcio Takara, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou. And this era of her life looks a lot darker than the last several years have been for the character. In several variant covers for Poison Ivy #1, Pamela is shown a lot more menacing than recent characterizations have presented her. Nick Robles’ cover presents an Ivy with attitude as she wields a trowel while Dan Mora’s cover shows her with a chilling glare. Warren Louw’s cover is possibly the most terrifying, showing Ivy gripping a skull, yet remaining frighteningly aloof.
