Benedict Cumberbatch has opened up about working with Jane Campion on The Power of the Dog and how he prepared for meeting her. The Power of the Dog is a psychological Western film that premiered on Netflix on December 1, 2021 after a limited theatrical release. The film is directed by Campion and based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Savage. The Power of the Dog follows hardened, domineering rancher Phil Burbank (Cumberbatch), who takes to psychologically tormenting his brother's new wife Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and her son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee). However, when the possibility of love arises, Phil develops a complex bond with Peter.
The Power of the Dog has performed exceptionally well and is leading the way at the 2021 Oscars, with a staggering 12 nominations. The nominations include a Best Actor nod for Cumberbatch, Best Supporting Actor/Actress nominations for Jesse Plemons, Dunst, and Smit-McPhee, and a Best Director nomination for Campion. Campion's nomination makes her the first woman to be nominated twice for a Best Director Academy Award. She received her first nomination in 1994 for her film The Piano.

In an interview with THR, Cumberbatch opened up about working with Campion on Power of the Dog. Cumberbatch praised Campion's work on the film, calling her a "poet." He also revealed that to prepare for meeting her, he re-watchedThe Piano in an attempt to catch further details that might impress her.
