Benedict Cumberbatch Had Concerns About Joining Doctor Strange
Benedict Cumberbatch discussed the thoughts he had before entering the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). As many know, Cumberbatch plays the powerful sorcerer Doctor Strange, who is one of the many heroes present in the MCU.
Doctor Strange was introduced in the self-titled movie and has made appearances in the Avengers films that followed as well as the recent Spider-Man: No Way Home film. Doctor Strange has quickly risen to prominence amongst fans and his importance in the MCU storyline is growing, as the character has been on the front lines of many big events in recent films.

Regarding the spectacle of these blockbuster films, Benedict Cumberbatch did an interview with Vanity Fair where he got honest about the internal conflict he was feeling when he was approached to do these bigger films. «Am I working for the Goliath that's killing the David?» the actor says, "...artistically, I never think of the two as completely mutually exclusive. Unless you have a Marvel star, financing any film is very, very, very, very difficult — no matter how important the story, no matter how urgent the story, no matter how talented and awarded and appreciated the artist is."
Cumberbatch is someone who enjoys the low budget and independent film market, so when he started working on bigger films, he was afraid of contributing to the difficulties smaller films face in terms of financing and attention. However, the alternative is that due to this exposure, he can potentially bring more attention and resources to the independent film scene. There's definitely an argument for both sides of the fence, but it's becoming clear that many think Marvel films
