Sonic the Hedgehog 2 star Ben Schwartz reacts to the film's record-breaking success at the box office. Schwartz voices the titular character in the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog, the smash hit adaptation of the popular video game franchise that originated on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1991. Released on April 8, Sonic is joined by his loyal sidekick Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) to take on the vile Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), who has returned from Mushroom Planet in search of the powerful Master Emerald. The evil scientist enlists the help of Knuckles (Idris Elba), a super-powered red echidna who wants nothing more than to defeat Sonic.
Although Schwartz has had a strong career, none of his previous starring roles were part of a film series as big as the Sonic franchise. The actor has previously been in blockbuster films with such roles as a banana peel in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part or as part of the voice crew for BB-8 in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but none of those parts were big enough to see Schwartz truly reap the benefits of the franchise. Sonic 1 opened on a four-day holiday weekend, pulling in $21 million its first day, and accumulating $70 million after all four days. If the first Sonic the Hedgehog film's success was any indication of the second's box office potential, then the sequel was already in a good place before it premiered.
