The DreamWorks animated film The Bad Guys is projected to topple Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore from its perch at #1 in the domestic box office this weekend. The Bad Guys, which opened in the U.S. on April 22, 2022, is loosely adapted from the Aaron Blabey children's book series of the same name. The film follows a version of the Big Bad Wolf who leads a gang of criminal animals as they attempt to become good guys. The massive voice cast includes Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson, Awkwafina, Richard Ayoade, Zazie Beetz, Lilly Singh, Alex Borstein, and Anthony Ramos, who recently joined the cast of the Disney+ MCU series Ironheart.
Meanwhile, Fantastic Beasts 3, which opened on Easter weekend, is struggling to achieve the success of its Wizarding World forebears. Although the Fantastic Beasts movies, which are Harry Potter prequels following magizoologist Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), have never achieved the success of the original franchise, the new entry opened $19 million lower than the previous lowest-performing film. This is likely due to a variety of factors including general dislike of the previous film Crimes of Grindelwald and behind-the-scenes controversies with cast and crew, including star Ezra Miller being arrested multiple times in Hawaii, former Grindelwald actor Johnny Depp being replaced by Mads Mikkelsen after being accused of domestic abuse by Amber Heard, and author J.K. Rowling's transphobic tweets.
