Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is on track to surpass the entire original film's US gross at the box office this week after earning $145.8 million so far. The sequel saw Ben Schwartz return as the blue speedster alongside Jim Carrey's Doctor Robotnik, James Marsden, and Tika Sumpter. Idris Elba and Colleen O'Shaughnessey joined the cast as iconic longtime Sonic the Hedgehog characters Knuckles the Echidna and Mile Tails Prower.
After vanquishing Dr. Robotnik to the World of Mushrooms and settling on Earth in the first film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 built upon the first film's success by bringing more of SEGA's beloved characters to the big screen. Following on from the first film's surprise success, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 broke box office records by having the highest-grossing video game movie opening to date and is currently set to continue to impress at the box office in the third week of its release.
