Minecraft remains one of the most popular games in existence, so it should come as no surprise that Warner Bros. wants to make a movie adaptation based on the IP. Much like the casting of Idris Elba as Knuckles, this new Minecraft movie plans to bring some unexpected talent on board. That talent comes in the form of Jason Momoa, the actor who starred in films like Aquaman and will also star in the Minecraft movie.
The company has little reason not to cast the former Aquaman, especially since the recent Sonic the Hedgehog 2 film proved movie adaptations of games can both perform well at the box office and earn a positive reception from fans.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Momoa has entered “the final negotiations” for his starring role. In regards to the film’s other credits, Jared Hess, who worked on the cult classic Napoleon Dynamite, will serve as the movie’s director, with Mary Parent and Roy Lee of Dune fame producing the film. Additionally, Jill Messick, who passed away back in 2018, will also receive credit for producing the film. Other producers include Lydia Winters and Vu Bui, both of whom hail from Minecraft developer Mojang Studios.
This already makes for an eclectic mix of talent, and I haven’t even mentioned Rob McElhenney, the lead actor in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia who was also attached to the film at some point. It seems difficult to imagine what the premise of the Minecraft movie will look like at this stage, but the involvement of Jason Momoa and other notable faces will likely make it interesting at the very least. This movie seems destined to rake in absurd numbers at the box office. But, of course, we’ll have to wait and see if it ends up being a high-quality product.
