Jason Momoa is set to star in Warner Bros.' live-action Minecraft movie. Momoa is the star of such hits as Aquaman, Dune, and the Apple TV+ series See. The actor has a number of high-profile projects coming up, including Netflix's adaptation of Slumberland, the western The Last Manhunt, and his highly anticipated DCEU sequel Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, which will debut in March 2023. Momoa also recently signed on to play the villain in Fast & Furious 10.
Minecraft is the popular video game from Mojang Studios and features block-style graphics that allow players to build intricate and immense structures. They can also participate in all manner of gaming modes, from survival to creative and beyond, making it one of the most versatile games available. Minecraft has spawned plenty of merchandise and content, from apparel, toys, books, an interactive TV show, and even its own convention, MineCon. The game is also exceptionally popular on YouTube, as users upload their various mods and gameplay to share with fellow players, generating massive followings and views.

It's now been announced (via THR) that Momoa will lead the long-in-development Minecraft movie, which is currently set to be directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite). No details were given in terms of Momoa's character or how he would be portrayed in Minecraft (live-action or otherwise). Other than Momoa and Hess, no other cast or crew announcements were made, and it's still unknown what creative direction the film will take in bringing the block-style game to life on the big screen.
The Minecraft movie has been in development since as early as 2014 with numerous creatives jumping in and out of the mix.
