There might just be a Streets of Rage movie released in the near future. This comes in the wake of news that several video game adaptations including Minecraft and Ghost of Tsushima are going to see the light of day.
The report comes from Deadline which also noted that Derek Kolstad will be writing the screenplay. Kolstad is mostly known for his work on the John Wick franchise. The first film was released in 2014 before being followed up by two separate sequels in 2017 and 2019. There is currently a third sequel in the works for 2023.

The production studio dj2 Entertainment is going to be responsible for the Streets of Rage movie. The company has been attracting a lot of attention for having turned Sonic the Hedgehog 2 into such a breakout success at the box office. The much anticipated It Takes Two and Disco Elysium adaptations are currently being handled by the studio.
Amazon has revealed that it will be working with dj2 Entertainment to finance the project, but there is currently no word on whether or not the Streets of Rage movie is going to be released on its streaming service, Amazon Prime. There has been much speculation about a theatrical release.
The first game in the Streets of Rage franchise came out on the Sega Genesis in 1991. The developer behind the game, Sega, went on to make two sequels in 1992 and 1994. Falling into the side-scrolling beat 'em up genre, Streets of Rage focuses on the efforts of various vigilantes to rid the world of organized crime. The latest entry in the franchise, Streets of Rage 4, was released to rave reviews in 2020. The game went on to sell over 2.5 million copies.
