Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now being projected to an even higher opening weekend gross of $200 million after an incredible opening day. The film is the second solo film for Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange after his introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016's eponymous movie. Although that film opened as the ninth-lowest weekend of the entire franchise, the character's popularity has grown considerably since then following his appearance in the Avengers crossover films Infinity War and Endgame, as well as popular entries like Thor: Ragnarok and Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is now the third highest-grossing domestic film of all time.
Doctor Strange 2 directly continues the story established in No Way Home, which saw Peter Parker (Tom Holland) approaching Cumberbatch's character to cast a spell that makes everyone in the world forget his secret identity. When he distracts Strange during the spellcasting, the multiverse begins to collapse in on itself, sending villains from previous Spider-Man universes into the MCU along with former Peter Parkers played by Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. Multiverse of Madness will show that this problem wasn't entirely resolved at the end of Spider-Man, and Strange will have to team up with Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Wong (Benedict Wong), and new multiverse-hopping heroine America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) to stop a terrifying new threat and a variety of multiversal variants including Evil Doctor Strange.
