Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron has explained why the sequel didn't introduce the X-Men or Mutantkind to the MCU. The Loki writer helped develop the story of the sequel to 2016's Doctor Strange alongside director Sam Raimi. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen reprise their roles of Stephen Strange and Wanda Maximoff.
After narrowly escaping Wanda's siege on Kamar-Taj, Strange and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) stumble into an alternate universe. Stephen is brought before this universe's Illuminati, including Professor Charles Xavier, with the mutant leader once more being played by Patrick Stewart. Complete with his Jim Lee-inspired yellow hoverchair and the classic animated series' theme tune, Multiverse of Madness' Xavier appearance is a faithful translation of the character, but the film doesn't reference the X-Men or the further state of Mutantkind in his brief appearance. Following the film's release, Waldron has explained why the film didn't put greater focus on Marvel's mutants.

When speaking to ET Online, Waldron explained why Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness limited its references to the X-Men, and why it didn't introduce Mutants to the main MCU. The writer explained that while discussions were made during development about Wanda's history with the X-Men in the comics, Waldron felt they weren't necessary for the story Multiverse of Madness was exploring.
