Warning: Spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
An explanation that would potentially fix Spider-Man: Far From Home’s multiverse plot-hole created by Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness would ruin Mysterio’s origin story. Though the concept of a multiverse was established years ago, it wasn’t until Doctor Strange 2 that Marvel finished introducing it. It tied into reveals and developments made in Loki, Marvel’s What If…?, and oddly enough, Far From Home.
The first MCU movie to really discuss how the multiverse works was Far From Home, where Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) laid out a few rules. He also gave a name to the MCU’s main timeline, Earth-616. However, it was understood by the end of the movie that nothing he said ever truly mattered. After all, he turned out to be just a con artist who tricked Spider-Man (Tom Holland) into thinking that he was some sort of multiversal hero. But one of his remarks suddenly became relevant again whenDoctor Strange 2 was released. In Doctor Strange’s second solo outing, the main timeline’s Earth-616 codename was confirmed.

Mysterio using Earth-838’s multiverse designations is now considered a Far From Home plot-hole, especially since he had no real knowledge of the multiverse. That being said, Doctor Strange 2 writer Michael Waldron has hinted at the possibility of his character somehow being right. Waldron said that his use of the name might be a coincidence, but also noted that Mysterio “was a smart guy”. If this is true, it would tear down a great origin story for a major MCU villain.
