Warning: Spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
A handful of Marvel Comics characters serve as candidates for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ missing Illuminati member. Like the original version of the comic book team, Doctor Strange 2’s Illuminati roster was comprised of six superheroes. However, the movie hinted at the MCU having a seventh member somewhere.
In the comics, the Illuminati was made up of characters in high positions of power who hailed from various corners of the Marvel Universe. Each of the three biggest superhero teams – the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and the Avengers – all had a representative in the group, whose purpose was to make decisions about the fate of the universe behind closed doors. The original Illuminati was made up of Professor X, Mr. Fantastic, Doctor Strange, Namor the Sub-Mariner, Black Bolt, and Iron Man. For the MCU’s take on the Illuminati concept, Marvel kept Black Bolt, Xavier, and Reed Richards but swapped out the others with a Maria Rambeau version of Captain Marvel, Captain Carter, and Baron Mordo.

The scene where Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange met the Illuminati on Earth-838 curiously included a seventh seat in the Illuminati’s council chamber. However, it was never filled within the events of the movie. Doctor Strange 2 writer Michael Waldron raised the possibility that it was a mistake, but that seems unlikely. Instead, there’s a much stronger likelihood that Marvel either intentionally left this open to interpretation or elected not to reveal the identity of the seventh Illuminati member.
