Live by Night star Sienna Miller jokes about the fact that she and her co-star Ben Affleck had no chemistry on set. The film, which is based on the 2012 crime novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane, came out on December 25, 2016. It follows an Irish-American World War I vet who becomes a bootlegger and prominent gangster in Boston during the Prohibition era. Affleck directed the film, which was a box office dud, losing approximately $75 million. The movie also starred Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina, Chris Cooper, and Guardians of the Galaxy's Zoe Saldana.
In Live by Night, Miller plays Emma Gould, who begins the film as the mistress of the current boss of the Irish Gang of Boston, Albert White (Robert Glenister). Ben Affleck's character Joe Coughlin falls head over heels for her, though he is discouraged from pursuing her by his police captain father Thomas (Gleeson). Indeed, their passionate affair becomes the catalyst for his descent into a life of crime, as a rival gang boss uses it as leverage to blackmail Joe into killing White, forcing him to flee, committing a bank robbery, and murdering several policemen in the process. The entire arc of the movie hinges on the chemistry between Emma and Joe to propel his Goodfellas style slippery slope to dark side.
