Avengers: Endgame star Karen Gillan has revealed that the opening montage of the film between her character, Nebula, and Tony Stark was improvised. Directed by the Russo brothers, Endgame marked the 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and served as a direct sequel to 2018's Avengers: Infinity War. The story of the film picks up immediately after the events of Infinity War when Thanos' Snap caused half the population of the universe to disappear. In its wake, the surviving members of the Avengers, led by Captain America and Iron Man, attempt to reverse the destruction caused by the Mad Titan.
Alongside Gillan, the film saw most of the Infinity War cast make a return for Endgame's main storyline and the culmination of the Infinity Saga, including Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man. At the beginning of the film, Downey Jr.'s Stark and Gillan's Nebula share a scene together. The scene takes place as one of the opening segments in the film when Nebula and Tony are stranded in deep space on board the Guardians' spaceship The Benatar, following their loss to Thanos on Titan. The montage features a mostly bleak look at the duo's situation as they slowly run out of resources to survive. Nevertheless, amidst all the doom and gloom, it does feature a humorous interaction between the two when they play a harmless game of table football to pass the time. The short but sweet sequence ends with Tony allowing Nebula to win, giving her the unfamiliar taste of victory, and fun, in the process.
