The events of Avengers: Endgame and Loki would have been very different if Hulk hadn’t been made to take the stairs after the battle of New York. With beloved characters, a sense of fun, and surprising emotional resonance, Avengers: Endgame was the ideal culmination of three phases of hugely ambitious, long-form storytelling that has had a massive impact both culturally and within the movie industry. Despite this, some consideration should be given to how Avengers: Endgame and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as a whole, would have been if certain elements had played out in different ways.
Following Thanos’ victory in Avengers: Infinity War, the remaining Avengers belatedly assembled to try to reverse The Snap that brought an end to half of the life in the universe. This took the form of a time heist that required them to take the Infinity Stones from various places at various times in the history of the MCU. Crucially, after Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) had successfully stolen the Tesseract, that timeline's Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) burst out of a door, livid at having been made to walk down the stairs from the top of the tower. He then knocked the Tesseract from Stark’s grasp, allowing Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to steal it and escape.

As a result, Tony Stark, and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) were forced to take a detour to Fort Lehigh in 1970, and Loki very briefly found his freedom before being apprehended by agents of the Time Variance Authority. But what if Hulk hadn’t caused this chaos? What if the Tesseract had never made its way into Loki’s hands and Tony Stark had been able to simply travel straight back to the future to rendezvous
