Facebook parent Meta plans on opening its first retail store on May 9, with the goal of promoting the company’s virtual reality products.
On Monday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg posted photos of the store, which will be located at the company’s campus in Burlingame, California. “It's a great way to see how our products connect people today and get a sense for what's coming as we build towards the metaverse,” he wrote.
Meta didn’t say if other stores are in the works. But in November, reports began circulating that the company was considering opening multiple stores as a way to promote its VR products. So it may be a sign of things to come, especially since Zuckerberg is betting big on plans to build a sprawling VR world called the metaverse.
The 1,550-square-foot store in Burlingame will offer customers a chance to try and buy the Quest 2, the company’s latest VR headset. This includes letting consumers stream their VR experience on a large display wall that’s nearby, enabling friends and family to enjoy the experience as well.
The shop will also sell the company’s smart display Portal hardware, and let users try on Meta’s smart glasses, the Ray-Ban Stories, although orders will have to be placed online at Ray-Ban.com. “At the Meta Store, we want you to interact with everything. We want you to pick stuff up. We want you to feel it,” the company wrote in the announcement.
For now, the store at 322 Airport Blvd will only be open on Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For those not in Burlingame, Meta today also created a new shop tab on its website to buy Meta's hardware online. If you're looking to try a Quest 2 device, you can also consider visiting a neighboring Best Buy or Target store.
