The gaming smartphone market will add another member to its limited but growing family with the ROG Phone 8 Pro, as ASUS looks to launch the first lineup of handsets sporting the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. To prepare potential buyers to obtain some bragging rights against Apple’s A17 Pro, the company has started teasing the performance of its upcoming flagship, starting with the Geekbench 6 multi-core results.
In the teaser below, ASUS reveals that the ROG Phone 8 Pro has achieved a multi-core score of 7,422, making it higher than any A17 Pro tested on the iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max. Unsurprisingly, ASUS did not reveal the single-core score of the upcoming flagship, as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has never been able to surpass the A17 Pro in this regard, regardless of how well-tamed its temperatures are.
One thing to remember is that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is equipped with an 8-core CPU cluster compared to the A17 Pro’s 6-core configuration, so Qualcomm’s flagship SoC should have the obvious advantage in multi-threaded workloads on paper. Another reason for this high score is that since the ROG Phone 8 Pro is a gaming smartphone, it will likely ship with a beefy vapor chamber, adding to its overall bulk and weight but letting the SoC perform better for extended periods.
Then again, companies habitually post performance numbers while testing their devices in unrealistic environments, so real-world tests of the ROG Phone 8 Pro will be done to see if reviewers and users can achieve the same results within a margin of error. We should also remind you that Apple’s A17 Pro runs into thermal throttling issues when running demanding gaming applications such as Genshin Impact, leading to performance issues.
This is because Apple skimped
