A new mod has included a popular mechanic from one of Bethesda's most beloved RPGs: . In both games, players can loot various slain enemies, acquiring new weapons or items as they traversed their open world — or in 's case, open galaxy — map. Unfortunately, when was released over a decade after, players felt its looting system lacked in comparison.
A mod by jedijosh920 has reinstated the old loot mechanic seen in the previous and titles through the "" mod. This mechanic shows the entirety of a dead NPC's playable inventory, and will gradually remove the items from the character model as players loot them, leaving the NPC literally stripped bare when all armor and clothing have been taken.
's loot system is based on Random Number Generation (RNG), meaning that much like tabletop RPGs, it all comes down to chance. The game will essentially throw an imaginary die and will reward players with appropriate items, based on the result of the throw. This can lead to random characters dropping legendary items in one attempt, but if a player then dies or has to restart that section for some reason, there is no guarantee they will get that same item on their next attempt.
Previous Bethesda titles had a greater sense of immersion because what players saw on the NPC character models was what they'd get if they looted them. It felt more tangible and real as everything that was visible on their model was lootable, including armor, clothing, weapons, etc, and players could see this being removed from the character model in real-time as they looted them. This helped with world-building too, as different types of enemies or groups would drop specific items, so players could strategize and know who to go after if they needed something specific.
Rather than going into such detail considering the scale of the rest of the game, it was likely easier to implement an RNG system for looting, but it did feel like was lacking some of the charm players had come to expect from previous
