The series not only garnered an exceptional response but also opened the window to controversies following the firing of its original creator,. The seasoned writer recently revealed yet another shocking story behind the show, which involved one of the co-executive producers in Episode 4. According to DeMayo, the said X-Men ’97 episode, titled “Motendo/Lifedeath – Part 1,” originally intended to have much more focus on Storm and Forge’s relationship than what viewers saw in the final product.
Per The Witcher writer, an unnamed X-Men ’97 co-executive producer handed the fourth chapter of the series to a What If…? editor to make significant structural changes.
Beau DeMayo took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the production issues he faced while creating the series’ fourth episode. He revealed that the said X-Men ’97 producer “stole the episode away and gave it to an editor on #WhatIf to redo it to her vision, which coincidentally eviscerated about 1/3 of Storm’s story and split Ep4 into two separate pieces.”
DeMayo also stated he wanted to kickstart Episode 4 by recreating a page from the comics that featured Forge taking care of Storm. Nevertheless, the aforementioned What If…? editor ultimately decided to leave the scene on the cutting floor. Upon protesting the change in X-Men ’97, Beau DeMayo said that he received “the usual stop being a comic collector speech from them.”
Beau DeMayo further added that he was the one who approached Gil Birmingham to portray Forge in the animated series. The Yellowstone actor was initially reluctant to the proposition after his role in a previous MCU project was cut without notice. However, DeMayo managed to convince him of the part, only for Marvel Studios to do the same with his character once again. As such, it remains unknown if Birmingham will come back to reprise his role in Season 2.
After helming X-Men ’97 Season 1, DeMayo soon switched to writing Season 2. Nonetheless, Marvel Studios fired him from his position shortly
