WWE has poked fun at the fan reception to the recently released Pat McAfee WWE 2K24 DLC pack.
The pack adds WWE commentator and former NFL player Pat McAfee as a playable superstar in the game.
He’s joined by four other playable characters – AJ Hawk, Darius Butler, Ty Schmit, and ‘Boston’ Connor – all of whom are co-hosts on the Pat McAfee Show, a daily sports talk show hosted on ESPN.
The pack has been received poorly by fans, who have responded in anger at several slots for DLC characters being ‘wasted’ on non-WWE personalities.
During WWE’s latest premium live event, SummerSlam, an advertisement for the DLC was played between matches. Following this, long-time WWE commentator Michael Cole joked to McAfee “hey, at least the fans seem to like it,” before laughing with fellow commentator Corey Graves, acknowledging the backlash.
“Yeah, I’d say that is not the case at all”, McAfee replied.
McAfee also referenced the backlash on social media, joking that “everybody is pumped about it, people are real excited”.
It’s worth noting that McAfee is a popular personality on WWE television, and fans are more upset by the addition of the co-hosts of his podcast as DLC fighters, rather than McAfee himself.
This is the third of five planned DLC packs for the game. The first, the ECW Punk Pack, was released in May and included CM Punk, Bubba Ray Dudley, D-Von Dudley, Sandman and Terry Funk.
This was followed by last month’s Post Malone & Friends Pack, which included Post Malone, Headbanger Mosh, Headbanger Thrasher, Honky Tonk Man and Sensational Sherri, as well as Jimmy Hart as a manager.
The fourth pack, set for release on September 20, is the Global Superstars Pack including Carlito, Dragon Lee, Jade Cargill, Kairi Sane, Lyra Valkyria, Michelle McCool and Nia Jax.
This will be followed by the WCW Pack on November 13, which will include Diamond Dallas Page, Lex Luger, Mr Perfect, the Great Muta and the Iron Sheik.
