Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot shares an update on Wonder Woman 3. Gadot's hero first debuted in the DCEU in Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. She followed that appearance in 2017 with the Patty Jenkins-directed solo film Wonder Woman which was widely praised and grossed over $820 million worldwide. Later in the year, Gadot returned to the role in the much maligned Justice League (2017) team-up film. The actor's last outing as Wonder Woman came in 2020 with Wonder Woman 1984, a film which portrays the character in the mid-1980s, living a double-life in Washington D.C. The film earned mixed reviews and did not fare well in the pandemic-restricted box office grossing $166 million on its $200 million budget.
Although rumored and discussed well before, Wonder Woman 3 was officially announced in 2020 just days afterWonder Woman 1984 was released. Jenkins has previously stated that she originally had clear plans for where she wanted the third film to go, but the director later paused writing during the pandemic to absorb the newer state of the world, possibly impacting the direction of Wonder Woman 3's plot. Lynda Carter, the actress who played Wonder Woman in the original 1970s television series has also been confirmed to return to franchise as Asteria after appearing briefly at the end of Wonder Woman 1984.
