Zachary Quinto shares an update on the progress of Star Trek 4. Quinto stars as Spock, the character originated by Leonard Nimoy in the original Star Trek series, in the reboot film series which began with the film Star Trek in 2009. The story technically takes place in an alternate reality, so Nimoy does make an appearance reprising his original role as an older version of Spock. The new cast, which also includes Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk and Zoe Saldaña as Nyota Uhura, appeared in two follow-up films, 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness, which introduced Benedict Cumberbatch as the iconic villain Khan, and 2016's Star Trek Beyond, which featured Idris Elba as a brand new antagonist.
While the onslaught of Star Trek series seems neverending as Paramount+ prepares to launch the brand newDiscovery prequel Strange New Worlds, the film franchise has struggled to put gas back into the engine. This is partially due to the fact that Anton Yelchin, who played crew member Pavel Chekov, tragically passed away at the age of 27 shortly before the release of the third film. However, producer J.J. Abrams previously confirmed in 2016 that a fourth film was on the way, featuring the return of Chris Hemsworth as Captain Kirk's father, though the Thor actor has since dropped out. Recently, it was announced that Star Trek 4 was happening with the original cast returning to film before the end of 2022. After this announcement, reports surfaced that the cast was unaware an announcement like this was coming, leaving the status of the movie up in the air.
