Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Picard Season 2, Episode 9 — «Hide And Seek»
Thanks to Dr. Agnes Jurati's (Alison Pill) permanent alliance with the Borg Queen (Annie Wersching) in Star Trek: Picard, the Borg are about to undergo a massive change that's perfect for Star Trek. InStar Trek: Picard season 2, episode 9, «Hide and Seek,» the Borg Queen led an assault of Borg drones to take over La Sirena. Her plan was to steal the starship and rebuild the Borg Collective with a «400-year head start» so that her cybernetic race can defeat the Confederation of Earth. However, Agnes was able to convince the Queen to embrace a different destiny for the Borg by agreeing to team up with her.
The Borg was introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation and has been largely unchanged in the decades since their debut. The Borg Queen, who was the main villain in 1996's Star Trek: First Contact, was the biggest change to the Borg when she was created. Instead of a drone-like hive of robotic Frankenstein monsters, the Borg Queen gave Starfleet heroes like Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Star Trek: Voyager's Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) an antagonist to match wits against. Indeed, whether she's played by Alice Krige, Susanna Thompson, Annie Wersching, or Alison Pill, the Borg Queen has emerged as one of Star Trek's greatest villains. But Star Trek: Picard has also explored an aspect of the Queen hinted at in First Contact: her inherent loneliness and desire for a counterpart. The Borg Queen assimilated Jurati in Star Trek: Picard, in part, because she found a kindred spirit in the cyberneticist and the Queen enjoyed bantering with Agnes, which alleviated her isolation.
