The iconic Marvel Comics mutant and X-Men member known as Wolverine has been around since the 1970s who, upon his initial introduction, became a character that fans could not get enough of. Yet before he was ever unmasked on the page, Logan's original design by legendary artist John Byrne was recycled for another iconic X-Men character, Wolverine's long-time nemesis and X-Men villain, Sabretooth!
Brought to fans’ attention a few years back via a John Byrne-related Twitter account (Byrne does not have an official Twitter handle at the moment), the story behind Wolverine’s maskless face has become a bit of comic book legend over the decades, one that @JohnByrneSays speaks to here. An artist who made a name for himself in the mid-1970s with writer Chris Claremont during their work on The Uncanny X-Men, John Byrne is also well-known for his art on various other comic properties such as Superman, Fantastic Four, She-Hulk, and more.

Introduced in 1974, Wolverine has become a juggernaut hero in the years since often being featured in more than a few titles at a time while continuing to make a splash on the big and little screen at a constant and steady rate. But before all the glitz and glam of becoming one of the most recognized fictional characters of all time, Wolverine was still just a mutant in a mask, with a costume design that saw him come across as more animal than human. And as Marvel moved towards unveiling what Wolvie would look like underneath the mask, John Byrne’s design for the long-awaited Wolverine reveal was scrapped, only to have it eventually be recycled in a way that became a story unto itself.
