The Dark Avengers are the perfect antithesis of the iconic superhero team, the Avengers proper, with a number of the Avengers’ personal villains making up the villainous copy. But one thing always stood out as a bit askew, as the name ‘Dark Avengers’ never quite captured the insidious nature of the gang. At least not the way another, cooler nickname does–one that was thought of by the Dark Avengers’ version of Wolverine.
The Dark Avengers made its first appearance in Dark Avengers #1 by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato. The team of villains was created under the leadership of Norman Osborn who rose to power after the fallout of Secret Invasion during which time the world lost its faith in superheroes and turned to Osborn for safety and security despite his villainous past. In this new squad, every hero on the Avengers was replaced by a villainous counterpart who assumed their assigned hero’s identity. Bullseye pretended to be Hawkeye, Venom was acting as Spider-Man, and Daken took over as Wolverine. After some time, the Dark Avengers fell and the original, heroic version of the team returned to its former glory. However, it wouldn’t be long before Osborn tried to revitalize his gang of villains with a whole new cast of characters, including an all-new Dark Wolverine who apparently was just as creative as he was deadly.
