A Drago spinoff movie is in the works at MGM with Dolph Lundgren set to reprise his iconic Ivan Drago role, a surprising addition to the Rocky and Creed franchise. Dolph Lundgren played Ivan Drago for the first time in 1985’s Rocky IV, and then returned to the role 33 years later forCreed II. The Creed sequel not only brought Ivan back but also revealed the character had a son, Florian Munteanu’s Viktor Drago, who served as the film’s main antagonist and is also set to appear in the Drago spinoff.
The news of a Drago spinoff movie came amidst controversy regarding the movie rights to the Rocky franchise. In a now-deleted Instagram post, Sylvester Stallone, who will not return for Creed III, made harsh comments about producer Irwin Winkler, who has been behind all of the Rocky and Creed movies. To add to Stallone’s dissatisfaction with not having ownership of theRocky movies, a type of legal issue that has become common regarding iconic franchises, the actor claims to not have been informed about nor is involved with the Drago spinoff. In another Instagram post, which is now also deleted, Stallone criticized the Drago spinoff and said he never wanted the Rocky franchise to be “exploited for this greed”.
