Thanks to Ms. Marvel’s ending, mutants officially exist in the MCU now. The big reveal came directly from Matt Lintz’s Bruno Carrelli, who had taken an interest in the powers Kamala had gained from her bracelet. According to Bruno, Kamala is the only member of her family to have abilities because of a “mutation” in her DNA.
Although Kamala was quick to shrug off the revelation, Bruno’s mutant tease carries great significance in the MCU. Ever since Marvel got the rights to the X-Men back, there’s been mounting speculation over how and when Marvel Studios will bring Wolverine, Magneto, Storm, and all the others into the picture. MCU Phase 4 took its first step toward Marvel’s Merry Mutants in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness when it featured an appearance from Patrick Stewart’s Professor X from Fox’s X-Men movies. However, his role was a cameo that happened via the multiverse and one that had no real bearing on the mainstream MCU’s interpretation of mutantkind. The wait for mutants on Earth-616 continued – and ended with the Ms. Marvel season finale.

It was widely theorized that Marvel’s introduction of the team would begin with a high-profile X-Men character like Wolverine or Cyclops, but the studio made an unexpected move by kicking off with Kamala Khan instead. Using Ms. Marvel over a fan favorite as huge as Wolverine allowed its big mutant reveal to come as a genuine surprise. After all, Kamala is an Inhuman – and not a mutant – in Marvel Comics.
