In gathering together the X-Men - Storm, Cyclops, Rogue, Wolverine, and their many allies - Charles Xavier pursued a simple dream: to unite humankind and mutantkind as one. However, it turns out that the team's resident loner could accomplish this goal all by himself, albeit at the cost of a huge body count. This surprising fact about Wolverine was revealed in What If...? #111.
Many Marvel fans now recognize What If...? as the popular MCU show. However, the very first What If...? comic book, «What If Spider-Man Had Joined the Fantastic Four,» came out in 1976. Marvel Comics has always dabbled in alternate stories, whether they're one-shot comics or entire series set in another potential timeline. However, in this particular story, it turns out Wolverine could accomplish Xavier's dream in his lifetime, but he'd need to become a villain to do it.

In What If...? #111, by Tom DeFalco and Adam DeKraker, Wolverine becomes War, a Horseman of Apocalypse, after an experiment intended to restore his adamantium (which Magneto famously stripped from his bones.) Corrupted by Apocalypse, Logan kills several members of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and other X-Men villains, then moves on to everyday criminals, leading the world to see him as an extremely dangerous threat. Wolverine's increasing kill count winds up bringing the Avengers, X-Men, and other superhero teams all together. The assemblage doesn't stop there either; the world's leaders actually put aside their differences to stand against the new, evil Wolverine, who has become a brutal force of nature.
