Queen Sonia is a major historical figure, and a minor character in . Sonia founded the version of Hyrule that originally existed in before being destroyed by Ganon. Sonia was a Hylian like Link and Zelda, and she married one of the few remaining Zonai, Rauru, who became the first king of Hyrule.

Though she existed far in the past, Zelda ends up meeting Sonia in when she is sent back in time. Sonia realizes that Zelda can use the same magic as her, and takes the princess under her wing to show her how to use it more effectively. Unfortunately, Zelda is unable to prevent Queen Sonia’s tragic ending in the game despite her powers.
Despite its detailed plot, Zelda: TOTK never fully explains why Zelda turned into a dragon. However, the reasons are there if players look carefully.
While Zelda is still in the past, Ganondorf arrives to pledge his loyalty to the King and Queen of Hyrule. Ganondorf initially tries to trick Sonia by sending a fake Zelda to try and assassinate her. The real Zelda is able to prevent this attempt, but Ganondorf himself arrives to finish the job moments later. Ganondorf then uses the Secret Stone from Sonia’s necklace to turn into the Demon King.
Following Sonia’s death, Zelda was able to teleport Sonia’s body to safety using her Purah Pad. Sonia would eventually be buried at the Forgotten Temple, which is located inside the Tanagar Canyon. Players can easily spot Sonia’s grave as it is surrounded by Sundelions, which become useful in 's late-game.
Though Queen Sonia passed away, her legacy lives on through Zelda. Sonia is descended from the original Zelda in and is the ancestor of the Zelda from and . As both the founder of the new Hyrule and one of Hylia’s descendants, Sonia is a very important figure in ’s history. As such, she lives on as a major figure in the minds of her people.
