The appropriately named turn-based tactics game Warhammer 40K: Tacticus has been a big success for developer Snowprint Studios. Since its launch in 2022, the game has achieved over 3 million downloads, and Snowprint is celebrating its second anniversary with a new update. Players can now recruit Space Marines from the Blood Angels and add them to their squad.
Warhammer 40K: Tacticus’ anniversary update adds the Blood Angel Mataneo to the game. An Intercessor Sargeant, he uses his jump pack to fly into battle against Orks and Tyranids alike. Players can also recruit the Blood Angel’s Chief Librarian, Mephiston, “The Lord of Death.” He’s notable in 40K lore for being the only member of his order to overcome the Black Rage twice.
The Black Rage is a curse inflicted on the Blood Angels after their leader, Primarch Sanguinius, fell in battle during the Horus Heresy ten thousand years ago. A genetic memory of Sanguinius’ battle with Horus, it’s known to drive Blood Angels mad with rage on the eve of battle. Few who succumb to the Blood Rage ever recover. “The mental war each member of the Blood Angels must endure fuels their wrath on the battlefield,” said Snowprint Studios. “They remain one of the Imperium’s most loyal chapters thousands of years into the grim, dark future.”
Warhammer 40K: Tacticus players recruit heroes from various 40K factions, including the Ultramarines, Adepta Sororitas, Necrons, Eldar, Death Guard, and more. They can then form a squad and lead them in turn-based battles. Hardcore Droid reviewed the game in 2022, praising its gameplay despite its monetization practices.
