Marvel Comics' Marauders series debuted a powerful new weapon in the form of the Hard Skin and Wet Skin, a combination of genetically-derived technology used by the secret Shi'ar order of the Kin Crimson, and derived from one of the symbiotes under Venom's care. While the Hard Skin is harvested from the genes of the population of planet D'Bari III, the Wet Skin hides a much more sinister secret: it was created by altering a mutant member of the Klyntar race.
The Shi'ar are a very old race of aliens who evolved from avian creatures and created a vast galactic empire over the course of centuries. While apparently ruled by an imperial figure called Majestor or Majestrix, in fact the Shi'ar Empire is controlled by a secret society called the Kin Crimson, dedicated to keeping the Ten Shames — the most important secrets in Shi'ar history — hidden. The Kin Crimson also include Erik the Red, a classic X-Men villain. Though they usually stay in the shadows, when the Kin Crimson act openly many facets of the Shi'ar Empire fall under their command, including even the Imperial Guard. the Kin Crimson are also powerful warriors, who fight using exclusive weapons called Hard Skin and Wet Skin.

Hard Skin is an advanced form of hard-light technology that allows a Kin Crimson noble to create solid constructs of light with just a thought, giving Erik similar powers to DC's Green Lantern. The power of Hard Skin is effectively limited only by a Kin Crimson's imagination and willpower, meaning that one of these nobles is as effective as an entire army or war fleet.
