This summer, Marvel Comics is currently gearing up for its newest Civil War-like event: Judgment Day. Judgment Day, also known as A.X.E.: Judgment Day, pits three central teams from the Marvel Universe against each other, with A.X.E. standing for Avengers, X-Men, Eternals. Rather than just being another Civil War where heroes fight heroes, however, a recent interview revealed one simple twist that could change the formula of the classic Marvel crossover idea.
Judgment Day, written by Kieron Gillen, follows Gillen's 12-issue run on Eternals which put pieces in motion for the event. Eternals ended with the group of immortals on the outs with the Avengers after a particularly bad fight. Previously, Thanos had been named Prime Eternal, upsetting the Avengers after they found out. While the Avengers thought they deserved to know this information, the Eternals thought that their longer lifespans meant it was their call to do what's best for Earth, with the Avengers as a more ancillary assistance. With the treacherous Druig now named Prime Eternal, the stage is also set for a conflict between the Eternals and the X-Men. Druig, who views mutants as Deviants, believes that the X-Men's recent discovery of immortality counts as «excess deviation» within the mutants. Because Eternals are coded to extinguish excess deviation they encounter, a clash between the two groups looms over the near future.
