Darth Vader's return in Obi-Wan Kenobi can help better explain the death of another Star Wars villain: the Grand Inquisitor. After only getting to be in the Darth Vader suit for a short time in Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, Hayden Christensen is returning as the iconic Star Wars villain on Disney+. There is great excitement to see him and Obi-Wan have a lightsaber duel in what has been described as the «rematch of the century» by Lucasfilm's president Kathleen Kennedy. However, Darth Vader isn't the only known villain from the galaxy far, far away returning.
As Lucasfilm begins marketing the series ahead of its May 2022 release on Disney+, the first Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer focused on a different group of villains than Darth Vader. The footage highlighted the live-action debut of the Inquisitors, a group of Force-users (and usually former Jedi) who turn to the dark side and work for Vader. This included introducing a new Inquisitor in Reva, but two familiar faces were also confirmed as Fifth Brother and the Grand Inquisitor appeared. Their mission is to hunt down any Jedi who survived Order 66, which will lead them to conflict with Obi-Wan before he faces off with Darth Vader again.

Now that these characters are confirmed to appear, Obi-Wan Kenobi has the opportunity to flesh out their stories. The Grand Inquisitor made his Star Wars debut in Star Wars Rebels, where he became a powerful and dangerous enemy for Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, and the rest of their crew. Even though Darth Vader also had a role in the show, he only appeared after the Grand Inquisitor's death. The Star Wars villain died in the Star Wars Rebels season 1
