Star Wars is making George Lucas' original Revenge of the Jedi plans canon. The first draft of Return of the Jedi was actually called "Revenge of the Jedi," and featured a very different plot with the Empire constructing not one but two Death Stars over the moon of Had Abbadon — envisioned as the Imperial capital and the seat of the Emperor's power. In this version, when Luke finally confronted the Emperor, he had unexpected help conveyed through the Force Ghosts – a feature that the saga is reincorporating.
In the end, in the original trilogy Force Ghosts serve purely as advisers and counselors. They're notably absent during Luke's final confrontation with the Emperor on the Second Death Star, leading to some initial speculation they could not manifest in the presence of the dark side; still, the Force Ghosts of Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi manifest when the battle is over, joined by Luke's father Anakin Skywalker, confirming he had truly been redeemed in the eyes of the Force. Star Wars: The Last Jedi surprised viewers when it gave Force Ghosts a new degree of agency, with Master Yoda able to affect the physical world — at least on the Force vergence that is Ahch-To.
