Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment today pulled the curtain back on their upcoming open-world Star Wars game, Star Wars Outlaws.
First teased back in 2021 as “The Star Wars Project,” Ubisoft and developer Massive Entertainment have fully revealed what they’ve been working on in collaboration Lucasfilm Games. Star Wars Outlaws is an open-world action-adventure game where players take on the role of scoundrel Kay Vess. The game utilizes Massive’s proprietary Snowdrop engine and is targeting a 2024 release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Star Wars Outlaws takes place between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. With the Galactic Empire singularly focused on wiping out the Rebel Alliance, the criminal underworld has grown unchecked. Seeking to start a new life, Kay Vess and her companion Nix must fight, steal, and outwit the galaxy’s crime syndicates and pull off one of the greatest heists the Outer Rim has ever seen.
Gameplay in Outlaws blends together third-person cover-based shooting, stealth, vehicular combat, space combat, and open-world exploration. Adding layers to gameplay is Nix, Kay’s companion who can be used to distract enemies, interact with the environment, and collect items and weaponry for her. At certain points in the campaign, players can choose different dialogue options that appear to set up different scenarios. As shown in the walkthrough, refusing to bribe an Imperial officer set off a manhunt for Kay.
Space combat plays a key component in Star Wars Outlaws. At anytime, players can hop aboard Kay’s ship, the Trailblazer, and seamlessly transition from ground to space with no loading. Once in space, you’re free to explore and engage in space combat. The only time you’ll need to
