Total War: Warhammer III has been review-bombed on Steam due to issues with promotion in the Chinese market. The game, part of Creative Assembly's long-running Total War series of hybrid strategy games, was released on February 17th, 2022 for PC, Mac, and Linux. Whereas most titles in the series cover historical conflicts (fr0m 15th-century Japan's Warring States period in Shogun: Total War to the early days of the Roman empire with Rome: Total War, both of which received sequels), Total War: Warhammer III is the latest in the first series of Total War games based on an entirely fictional setting, that of Games Workshop's Warhammer series of dark fantasy war games and books.
Since the 2000 release of Total War: Shogun, the British developer has garnered worldwide popularity among strategy game enthusiasts. In particular, 2019's Total War: Three Kingdoms became the series' fastest-selling and most-played title to date. This is due in no small part to Chinese players, who despite not receiving an official release in their country, drove sales of the title, in which players experience the events of China's Three Kingdoms era (c. 220-280 C.E.). With the inclusion of the playable human faction of Grand Cathay (modeled after ancient China), Warhammer III looks to continue this trend.

However, a change in marketing strategy has drawn the ire of Chinese gamers, who have taken to Steam in droves to leave negative reviews.
