Marvel's current Avengers run has completely forgotten Mephisto's true nemesis — Norrid Radd, the Silver Surfer. In 2018, writer Jason Aaron took over Marvel's main Avengers book. He was coming off the back of a popular and critically-acclaimed Thor run, one that's destined to have a massive impact on the MCU — given it notably transformed Jane Foster into the Mighty Thor.
Aaron has reframed the history of the Avengers, revealing a version of the group has existed since 1,000,000 years ago. Their greatest enemy is in fact Mephisto, the Lord of Hell himself, because since the dawn of time the Avengers have been unknowingly fighting against Mephisto and his pawns. Indeed, most of Aaron's heroes have been revealed heirs to a legacy of heroism running back to prehistoric times. But, curiously, Aaron seems to have completely forgotten Mephisto's true nemesis — the Silver Surfer.

The Silver Surfer first crossed paths with Mephisto in 1968's Silver Surfer #3, when his nobility drew Mephisto's ire. "Since the dawn of time," Mephisto reflected, "seldom have I sensed such goodness of soul — such a purity of spirit — as I sense within the Silver Surfer! All that you are — all that you stand for — is abhorrent to the Lord of the Lower Depths! So long as you exist, Mephisto's scheme supreme will ever be in jeopardy!" Mephisto has launched countless attempts to destroy, or better still to corrupt, the Silver Surfer — but none have proved successful.
