If the rumors are true, Jane Foster is coming to Marvel’s Avengers as the first playable character since Spider-Man joined the PlayStation roster last November. It’s been a long wait between heroes and it’s probably safe to say that Marvel’s Avengers is never going to find a sustainable audience at this point. And yet, despite all of its many failings, I have to give the game credit for this one. Jane Foster’s arrival will supposedly coincide with Thor: Love and Thunder, AKA the MCU debut of Lady Thor. This is the kind of cross-media synergy that Marvel’s Avengers should have prioritized all along. If it had, maybe the game would have had a better chance of surviving.
The only evidence of Jane Foster comes from a Twitter leaker known as Miller who has reliably leaked some Marvel’s Avengers skins in the past. Miller says he previously expected She-Hulk to be the next character added to the game, but that Crystal Dynamics has shifted the schedule so that Jane Foster can join the roster in conjunction with the release of Thor: Love and Thunder in July, while She-Hulk will be released closer to the start of the She-Hulk series on Disney+.

While it’s likely too little too late, I can’t help but wonder how this kind of planning might have helped Marvel’s Avengers gain some momentum last year. When Kate Bishop joined as the first post-launch character, followed shortly by Clint Barton, there wasn’t a lot of enthusiasm around those characters. Kate Bishop had not yet made her MCU debut, and even among comics knowers she’s a relatively obscure hero.
